Global Perspectives on Conscientious Objection

Why do people choose not to fight in wars? What are the international laws around conscientious objection? What is it like to be a conscientious objector? These are some of the questions we will explore in this series.

Choosing not to fight in the context of war is an extraordinarily brave choice to make and one that Quakers have long championed. In this series of three 90-minute sessions we will hear from voices in different parts of the world on questions including:
• What are the international laws regarding conscientious objection?
• Why do people become conscientious objectors?
• What challenges do conscientious objectors face?
• How do conscientious objectors find the strength to sustain their positions?
• How are organisations supporting conscientious objectors to claim asylum on the basis of their stance?
• How can we support conscientious objectors?

We will hear from experts in international law, individuals who have chosen to be conscientious objectors and organisations working to support them in different parts of the world.
