30 - 31 August
The live Zoom sessions are at 19:00-20:30 on Friday 30 August and 09.30-10.30, 11:30-12.30, 14:30-16:00 on Saturday 31 August
The four New Testament Gospels are the source of what we know about Jesus and his earliest impact. Focussing on several key points for each gospel, we will seek to draw out some observations relevant to Quaker understandings today.
Matthew, Mark and Luke share a significant amount of material, yet they shape their common elements to emphasise different aspects of the story. John’s Gospel is substantially different and we will look at why that is and what that reveals about the writer and his community.
Taking each of the Gospels in turn, we will consider the various different reactions to Jesus among his disciples and adversaries. We will reflect too on the gospel writers themselves and the concerns of those for whom they were writing. While this course will be introductory, it will aim to open up a helpful perspective for Quakers seeking to better understand the roots of the Quaker tradition.
