In this short online course, David Curtis puts George Fox in dialogue with the early non-conformist Gospel of Mary Magdalene. This forms part of a series of events celebrating the 400th anniversary of George Fox.

Both Fox and The Gospel of Mary are deeply rooted in and shaped by the transformative power of visionary experience. Both affirm the indwelling restorative presence of Christ, the Son of Man, the Child of True Humanity within everyone. And both emphasise that this is directly available to all women and men, unmediated by the authorities of church hierarchy.

The Gospel of Mary reveals a radical revisioning of Christianity from a woman’s perspective nearly 2000 years ago, and asks questions about the nature of visionary experience. Its non- conformist approach holds much in common with modern Quaker faith and practice. We will bring this into dialogue with the legacy of George Fox to explore convergence and differences, and thus widen our understanding of both.

There will be some material to look at before the first session. We will email you around one week prior to the course with information about accessing the course, including this material, on our online learning platform (Moodle).
